Rioplatense Spanish (Buenos Aires) is characterized by voseo, sh-yeísmo, and Italian-influenced intonation. A further distinctive feature is its productive use of Spanish morphological suffixes to coin new words — the -izar and -ificarse verb-forming patterns are commonly extended in Buenos Aires informal and literary speech to create neologisms that would be understood from their roots even without existing in a dictionary. Argentine Spanish also retains clear intervocalic consonants and articulates final 's' firmly, in contrast to Caribbean varieties.
