Rioplatense Spanish strongly favors the simple preterite ('recordé', 'salí', 'fui') for completed past actions over the present perfect ('he recordado') common in Peninsular Spanish — Buenos Aires speakers use the present perfect rarely, and mostly for very recent events. Combined with voseo and sh-yeísmo, this preference for preterite over perfect is one of the clearest grammatical markers distinguishing Rioplatense Spanish from Spanish varieties in Spain. The Buenos Aires accent also features a distinctly melodic, rising-falling intonation shaped by Italian immigration.
